The Peguerinos theater, in the heart of the Guadarrama mountain range, became the epicenter of emotion, beauty, and feminine power last weekend with the presentation of the show Omphalos. The navel of the worldThis performance, a vibrant fusion of modern oriental dance and contemporary ethnic dance, placed a group of women at the center of the stage, claiming space, dignity, and voice with every step, gesture, and glance.
The audience packed the hall and offered no shortage of cheers or applause. What happened on stage was much more than a performance: it was a celebration of diverse bodies, shared identity, social inclusion, and the transformative power of art when it is rooted in community. The performers, women of different ages and backgrounds, brought to life a choral piece that evoked roots, ties, and symbolic territories of belonging through a powerful, profound dance connected to the ancestral.
This show is part of the International Host Lab, a space for creation and training in the performing arts developed in the town of Peguerinos (Ávila) as part of the ambitious European project ABC – The Alphabet of Love, co-financed by the European Union. Coordinated in Spain by the Alicia Alonso Dance Foundation, the project focuses on culture as a driver of cohesion, dialogue, and empowerment, especially in rural areas and with groups at risk of exclusion.
Once again, the Alicia Alonso University Dance Institute reaffirms its commitment to inclusive performance practices, to extending dance beyond conventional circles, and to the conviction that art, when created from the roots and for the common good, can truly transform. In Peguerinos, the "navel of the world" beat strongly, and it did so to the rhythm of women who dance, resist, and express themselves freely.
