On December 11, 2024, a group of students from the Alicia Alonso University Institute of Dance (IUDAA) majoring in Circus Arts and Techniques attended the Madrid premiere of “Alegría – Bajo Una Nueva Luz,” the revamped version of the iconic Cirque du Soleil show. This experience was made possible thanks to a special invitation from the Canadian company, which offered future artists the opportunity to witness a high-level artistic production firsthand.
Attending the show allowed students and alumni of the IUDAA to appreciate the evolution and adaptation of “Alegría”, one of the shows that remains in the memory of spectators. The new version has maintained the essence that has made it a benchmark of contemporary circus. The production, which celebrates its 25th anniversary, has been reimagined with new musical arrangements and a renewed aesthetic, captivating the Madrid public at its premiere session.
The Alicia Alonso University Institute of Dance is a pioneer in Spain in higher education in circus arts, offering a specific mention in Acrobatic and Circus Dance within its Degree in Visual Arts and Dance. This comprehensive training prepares students to face the challenges of 21st century performances, combining circus tradition with new artistic trends.
The collaboration between IUDAA and Cirque du Soleil reinforces the commitment of both institutions to artistic excellence and the training of new talents in the field of performing arts. The students expressed their gratitude for the experience, highlighting the inspiration and learning gained from witnessing a show of such magnitude and quality.
