The study plan leads to obtaining the Degree in Visual Arts and Dance (with mention in: Classic dance, Contemporary dance, Spanish dance, Dance Theater, Acrobatic and Circus Dance), by the Rey Juan Carlos University (IUDAA-URJC).

The Degree in Visual Arts and Dance with Mentions is a shared degree developed by the "Alicia Alonso" Higher Institute of Dance, which is responsible for 87% of the contents in collaboration with the Department of Educational Sciences, Language, Culture and Arts, Historical-Legal and Humanistic Sciences and Modern Languages ​​of the University King Juan Carlos, who assumes 13% of the contents of the theoretical subjects.

Degree Objectives

Degree studies aim to offer general training aimed at preparing for the exercise of professional activities. This is achieved by providing the student with a number of skills that guarantee their insertion into the labor market but also allow them to evolve in response to the demands of society in an open and constantly changing context. 

The European Commission of Education recognizes the importance of the development of the performing arts and its relationship with information and communication technologies (ICT). The study carried out by the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, the University of Amsterdam, Holland and the University of Tampere in coordination with the University of Helsinki, Finland is specified in seven points that have been taken as fundamental external references at the time of define the objectives of this University Degree in Visual Arts and Dance, which are the following:

-The need to learn the relationship of the Performing Arts with the media and with the flow of transnational capital.
-Study the performing arts within the global market and their development through the visual arts and audiovisual technologies that support communication.
-Know the role of Visual Arts, Dance and Theater within the globalized economy.
-Study the forms of creative collaboration in cultural projects linked to business responsibility and the global market.
-Know the international commercial requirements for assessing artistic and ethical quality from a sociopolitical point of view.
-Study the role of the European artist in the conservation of traditions and history from a contemporary perspective.
-Analyze European thought to avoid distortions in the field of artistic creation.

Based on this premise, the objectives are summarized as follows:

– Develop knowledge and skills in the field of New Technologies of the Performing and Visual Arts based on practical experiences.
-Train students in analysis techniques to understand different artistic languages, linking these with Visual Arts and Dance.
-Develop historical interest in students by introducing them to knowledge of interpretative, circumstantial, environmental, ritual or symbolic aspects incorporated by people throughout history as forms of expression.
-Train students in the techniques and methods of appreciation and transmission of knowledge of the arts as an expression of cultural heritage.
-Teach the fundamental concepts of the Performing and Visual Arts. Main theoretical currents and authors.
-Develop the necessary skills to creatively apply the principles of choreographic creation and interpretation in their relationship with the visual arts.
-Assimilate the theoretical and methodological problems related to the Performing and Visual Arts and especially Dance.
-Introduce students to the development of skills based on knowledge and practical mastery of different techniques.

Recommended income profile

Applicants with a Middle Degree in Dance, or equivalent training in private centers, Baccalaureate and university access test EvAU who wish to achieve high levels of artistic and academic excellence through continued performing practice.

High school applicants with university entrance test EvAU and with a vocation for musical theater, physical theater of movement, performance, audiovisual creation, communication design and other related disciplines.

Students who opt for these degrees must pass the Evaluation for Access to the EvAU University and la specific entrance test, aimed at measuring skills such as musicality, sense of space, coordination, visual memory and improvisation capacity.

Are there minimum permanence requirements?

  • The permanence of the students in the Degree studies will be a maximum of eight years for full-time students. Part-time students may request an extension of up to two more years from the Rector.
  • In Bachelor's degrees lasting more than 240 credits (4 years), the maximum of the previous section will be increased by one more year for every 60 ECTS credits that are added to the 240 ECTS.
  • Students must pass a minimum of two subjects in the first year. Students studying part-time must pass at least one subject in their first academic year.
  • Students who are studying any official Bachelor's degree at the Rey Juan Carlos University may make a maximum of four registrations to pass each of the subjects of the study plan, without counting previous cancellations of the same.
