The leyend of dancing Alicia Alonso receives the Title of Distinguished Visitor of the city of Segovia

Clara Luquero, the Mayor of Segovia, gives the honour to the recognised Cuban dancer during the World Theatre Congress of ITI

GUILLERMO HORMIGO, Segovia. 7/18/2017

The City Council of Segovia honoured the dancer and choreographer Alicia Alonso as Distinguished Visitor of the City. In a ceremony celebrated this Tuesday morning in the town hall, the Segovian Mayor Clara Luquero delivered Alonso de an artistic certificate, a new honour for one of the most distinguished figures in the 20th Century.

“I wish I could say what my heart feels, but it is too much”, the decorated artist said. “I feel really happy, the recognition of your work is the biggest thing that could happen to any one. Even though I die, you will know I am thaking you”, the artist added while the public clapped.

On the other hand, the Mayor remembered other distinctions the Cuban choreographer has received in her outstanding activity: from the Golden Medal of Arts ins Spain, to her designation as Peace Coucelor of UNESCO. Luquero said that Alonso is “a real cultural treasure alive, with a smile so enigmatic as the smile of the Gioconda”.

Culture Councillor Marifé Santiago pointed out the implicated side of the artista, who has always fought to make ballet not only an art for the elites, but it also for all the publics. “Art and beauty are always fighting to improve dignity of people”, concluded the Councillor.

The ceremony was organised at the same time that the 35th World Theatre Congress by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), among with the Rey Juan Carlos University –where ITI Spain center is placed-. Alicia Alonso Universitary Dance Institute is also part of all these events. The conclussion of all these activities will be on Sunday, when Alicia Alonso will become Dance World Ambassador in the Congress closing ceremony.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional “entradilla segoviana”, a music wellcome for important city visitors. And any visitor is more distinguished –now officially- than an artist that is a symbol of human commitment, and the Latin name of dance.
